“From the moment the camera touches Mr. Farnsworth’s face you know everything about him and you love him.” – Colleen Dewhurst

In honour of Father’s Day, we decided to take a look at perhaps the most moving portrayal of fatherhood in the many Sullivan series.

In the days leading up to Mother's Day, we are often exposed to the poems, sonnets and quotes that have been written about mothers throughout history.  But here is a look at what motherhood actually means to mothers themselves, as told directly from the point of view of the famous author of Anne of Green Gables.

“Don’t eat it Miss Stacey!”
“Anne, what is wrong with you?”
“A mouse drowned in the sauce, Marilla.  I was working up the courage to tell you when Miss Stacey came and…”
“Anne, if you intend to go for a teacher, you are going to have to give up your feather-brained ways.  You are not interested in anything but your silly daydreams and nothing else.”
“I really am trying to overcome my faults, Marilla.  I chatter on far too much.  But if you only knew how many things I want to say and don’t, you’d give me some credit.”

The opportunities that Marilla gave Anne to play host and cook for her guests often ended in disaster, as was the case with the famous plum pudding scene.

It's never been easy for me to say the things from my heart, but you're like my own flesh and blood now. - Marilla Cuthbert, Anne of Green Gables

Though it was not always easy for Marilla to express her feelings for the girl who became her daughter, Anne was never at a loss for words in telling Marilla how she felt about her.  In honour of Mother's Day, here are a selection of quotes about mothers - both comical and serious - from some of the most famous writers, politicians and poets in history.

Tea Time with Anne

"There's no scope of the imagination in cooking. You simply have to go by the rules. Last time I made a cake, I forgot to put the flour in it. I was thinking about the lovely joy about us, Diana. I imagined you were desperately ill with small pox, and when everyone deserted you, I went over to your bedside and nursed you back to life.

“ Just think what a lovely place to live – in an apple blossom! Fancy going to sleep in it when the wind was rocking it. If I wasn’t a human girl I think I’d like to be a bee and live among the flowers.” -Anne Shirley

Easter is the perfect time to celebrate the first appearance of spring. As you may be aware Anne’s very favourite season was spring. Anne loved to drifted apart from reality and get lost among the mist of woods and meadows around Avonlea. She thought playing games, gathering bouquets, having picnics, and picking apples from the trees was perhaps the most enduring beautiful way to spend her days. As she and Diana often wandered around Anne of Green Gables to collect many wild flowers for Marilla.

Easter Ideas

For all those Easter lovers, who bring on the whole family to eat, well why not try an Easter Buffet rather than cooking one big meal that could go towards a disaster.
