New $1 Coin Honours Lucy Maud Montgomery

Agatha Krzewinski

The Royal Canadian Mint has recently unveiled a new $1 coin honouring Lucy Maud Montgomery, the first Canadian author to be featured on a coin. The coin celebrates her 150th birthday.

The coin was unveiled at the Green Gables Heritage Place and set into circulation on June 27th and pays tribute to Montgomery's role in popularizing Prince Edward Island and Canada through her classic novel Anne of Green Gables.

"It's such a story that's important to be told," Marie Lemay, president and CEO of the Royal Canadian Mint told the CBC. "To have P.E.I. artists design this coin and we can engrave in a piece of metal the story, and it will move on from hands to hands, coast to coast for a long, long time... we're very proud of that.”

The artwork was designed by author and PEI artist Brenda Jones, who has worked in the animation and television industry, and has a family connection to Anne of Green Gables. Her grandparents previously owned the Green Gables House, which now is known as the Green Gables Heritage Place.

The coin depicts a portrait of L.M. Montgomery at the time Anne of Green Gables was written, along with her signature, and a cat drawing that she usually included when signing. The coin also features the fictional Anne Shirley gazing out at the PEI landscape, which is designed as patchwork quilt of red and greenfields. The reverse side features the new Canadian effigy of His Majesty King Charles III designed by Canadian artist Steven Rosati.

The coin will be limited to a circulation of 3 million, with 2 million being colourized versions, and will include the red island soil, green farm fields, and blue sky. Coin collectors can also contact the Royal Canadian Mint to order the collectible coins, which are uncirculated $1 and $20 coins, and use greater colour and come in gold and pure silver.
